I think it's pretty clear that music could play a big role in the Far West universe. Obviously there will be a couple of thematic tropes that will be common, and appropriate, but diversity will be key here, and there may be something obvious nobody's thought of, or something obscure that would be a perfect fit.

With that in mind, I'd like to start a collection here of soundtracks, youtube links, Pandora Stations, Spotify URLs, or anything that could be used to lend some auditory immersion to the world.

I'll start with a track that, for me, seems perfect for the setting: Yoshida Brothers, Storm (http://youtu.be/Z1fTbDJiyrM) ]]>

One of the first things that came to mind was something action-comedy-y, "They Call Me Trinity" as choreographed by Jacky Chan - a bunch of ne'er-do-wells of one sort or other, together by chance or history or some other tie, getting into and out of trouble from one town to the next. Light, easy, and something I wouldn't mind running to learn the ropes of the system before throwing in for something with a little more depth.

Firefly reskinned would be another fun starting point for a campaign - the crew of an airship, making the runs the Chartered Houses can't be bothered with, doing the jobs to keep themselves on the move and out from under the Empire's thumb. Lots of fun to be had there, especially if you make sure everybody's got ties to bigger things.

So, what are you thinking of running when you get your hands on the rules?]]>

A movie in my mind titled - Once upon a time in the Far West:

A steam baron sends a gang of killers to destroy a small village to claim it’s water rights.

House XièCáo (Steam Baron):
Sonny Chiba as Chang XièCáo, head of HouseXièCáo

Red Rain (mercenary group sent to destroy Star’s Folly):
Henry Ford as Ted Long, Chang XièCáo’s head assassain, leader of the Red Rain
Lee vanCleef as Ropeburn, a man hanged twice but to mean to die Ted’s second
Toshirô Mifune as Tetsuo Eagle Scream, an honorable man bound to a dishonorable duty

Star’s Folly (small village with too much water):
Mako Iwamatsu as Geong Sheon a farmer, Imperial guard deserter, a wanted man
Chow Yun Fat as Tinnin Madu Sheriff of Star's Folly, master of two-gun-fu
Park Chang-yi as Kim Sheon, son of Geong, yearns for excitement away from his life on a farm
Lucy Lu as Madame Gou, owner and operator of Gou’s general store and teahouse
Ziyi Zhang as Darling Gou, Madame Gou’s daughter, teahouse girl, desired by Tinnin Madu, Kim Sheon and Ropeburn
Slim Pickens as the Mayor of Star’s Folly

Prolog:
Chang XièCáo is in a heated meeting with his creditors over the rising costs and lack of water for a new steam line running from Sedoa to Big Sky. Land and water rights have been obtained for the entire planed route except for the small farming community of Star’s Folly. If XièCáo cannot get the water rights for the stretch of steam line running through Star’s Folly his creditors will pull their funding and bankrupt his family.

Scene One:
Setting: An outlaying farm ten miles from Star’s Folly at night, Night Wolf crouches low in the west as Rushing Rabbit is high above making it’s second run across the sky. A distant rumble fast approaches the farm. A dread tension fills the air of the farm as the rumble gets louder; the agitated livestock, grep chickens and pigs all add their panicked cries to the closing noise. The farms dogs stand guard at the farm’s tori (gate) growling low with hackles razed.
Farmer Mardren and his son leave the farmhouse dressed in bedclothes and armed with shotguns, the farmer’s wife follows carrying a spear herding 3 young children to the farm root cellar. In the dark of night the rumble looks like a cluster of 30 stars bobbing and weaving as it rushes nearer and nearer the farm. The rumble resolves into the pounding of horse hooves and the stars into torches being carried by dangerous men. Farmer Marden raises his shotgun towards the rushing hoard, yelling at his wife to hurry and get the children to safety but his commands are cut short as a bullet passes through his neck.
Bullets pepper Farmer Marden’s son before he can even react to his father’s death. In the blink of an eye riders wearing red masks are upon the farm hurling their torches into the home and the barn burning everything before them. Half of the red masked riders spread out into the fields and pens slaughtering the animals and lighting the crops.
“I only count two bodies there ought to be six. Find me the others.” The lead rider says with a clear and almost kind voice, “There’ll be no survivors tonight.”
Just then a rider screams out in pain his chest pierced by the farm wife’s spear.
“Found them.” Another rider says sardonically before riding to the cause of the scream.
The farm wife stands holding back a small mob of un-mounted riders, her back to a entrance of a storm cellar. Her spear flashes out stabbing and slapping the masked men preventing them from shooting her or even approaching. A cruel smile hidden by his mask crosses the mounted riders face as he pulls out a small bundle of red sticks, lights the fuse and tosses it in a high arc. The bundle of dynamite passes overhead of the farm wife and into the open door of the cellar. The explosion digs a new hole in the damp earth and knocks flat the farmwife and the surrounding riders. Horrified the farm wife pusses up to her knees looking at the creator where her children where before. A bullet ends her anguished scream before it starts.
A third mounted rider lowers his gun, “Damn you Ropeburn, did you need to do that?” he snaps.
“Didn’t feel like digging in the dirt to off a few brats Eagle Scream. My way was quicker.”
“They probably heard the blast all the way in town also.” The first rider breaks in interrupting Eagle screams rising anger. “Get the men moving we need to out of here before someone from Star’s Folly shows up looking for the cause of the explosion.”
“Yes sir Red” Ropeburn and Eagle Scream say in unison before rounding up the riders and heading back into the night towards Night Wolf’s maw.

More cast and plot to come.

Sparrow was the son of a blacksmith bound in familial servitude to an Imperial magistrate. His work was art and he excelled in creating his master's favorite requests: weapons. The magistrate's daughter, Cloudless Sky was beautiful and kind; as things are often to be, Sparrow and Cloudless Sky fell in love. It was of course, forbidden and when discovered the magistrate's wrath was total. He sent guards to kill Sparrow, but he escaped. The magistrate told his daughter her love had been killed resisting arrest and the girl soon took her own life, knowing she would never be complete without her true love. Knowing the suicide of his publicly-beloved daughter would embarrass the family, the magistrate created a lie telling that Sparrow, since he could not have her, killed her and then fled.

Sparrow, upon learning of Cloudless Sky's death, began creating his greatest work: a simple, yet elegant straight-bladed sword inscribed with a poem written to his dearest love. Both the weapon and words are masterpieces. It is said that he quenched the blade in only the tears he shed for Cloudless Sky and that his blood, burning with more intensity than the fires of the forge, was used to color the inscription.

He took his masterpiece and carved a bloody swath to the magistrate's gates. All who faced the blade were stricken with an overwhelming sadness from the words adorning its length, weakening their resolve to face the weapon's wielder. Sparrow found little worthy resistance and soon stood over the magistrate's corpse. Sparrow collected Cloudless Sky's ashes and disappeared, with only rumors accounting for his whereabouts.

That was very long ago and it is told that he laid both his love and sword to rest, eventually joining them in a place often sought, but still undiscovered...

That was one of them. I obviously have no clue as to what mechanics would apply, but I'm hoping that this would fit into Far West. Basically, anyone wielding the sword for the purpose of protecting someone they love completely, grants power to the weapon. Those who face the blade suffer penalties and/or the wielder is granted bonuses (as long as it's intrinsic to the betterment of who they love). Sorry for any crappy prose/grammar! LOL

My friend came up with a whip that was carried by a cruel slaver. The black leather is stained with the blood of the countless slaves who've suffered its lashes. It grants the one carrying it bonuses to intimidating others, as long as they can see the whip (it doesn't have to be used in combat to grant the bonuses). It also causes excruciating pain to those it strikes. This will have the mechanical effect of the victim incurring penalties higher than what the damage incurred would normally place.

Miniature compatible? http://www.intothefarwest.com/forum/discussion/47/miniature-compatibles Mon, 13 Feb 2012 12:26:25 -0700 hewhowalks 47@/forum/discussions
Most storytelling systems typically don't promote miniatures, and I agree that miniatures and battle mat combats can cause players to think only inside the box. Lord knows I don't want Far West to be another D&D miniature combat system. However, there are a lot of fun cowboy/kung fu minis out there and, if used correctly, can add a great visual element to any game.

I'm hoping Far West is something similar to Savage Worlds where you can use minis if you want, but are by no means required.

I'm not asking for a rules sneak peak, I was just wondering if it would be okay to pass the time waiting for the rules to come out painting some cowpokes with kanji on their dusters? Or am I putting the cart before the horse?

Just in case minis are viable and anyone's interested, here's some mini lines I like.
Heroscape
Wyrd miniatures
Reaper Chronoscope and Deadlands line
Great Rail Wars minis by Jeff Valent
Lots of historical mini companies (if you can find the correct scale)]]>
